The small towns of Encampment and Riverside, Wyoming, rest at the base of the Sierra Madre Mountains, and are the gateway to the Medicine Bow National Forest. Near Encampment and Riverside, approximately 45 miles of the CDNST pass through relatively undisturbed areas of the forest, climbing above 10,000 feet, and offering some of the best views in southern Wyoming.
Located in the ancestral homelands of Eastern Shoshone and Tséstho’e (Cheyenne) peoples, Encampment was first named “Grand Encampment” in 1838 by fur trappers for their mountain trading fair (or Rendezvous) which occurred by the river. Copper was later discovered in the Sierra Madres, and both towns boomed at the turn of the century. Riverside, formerly known as “Doggett,” was established as the ranching headquarters of the area in 1897, and became a town in 1902.
The closest international airport to Encampment and Riverside is Casper/Natrona County International Airport (CPR), which is about 2 hours and 45 minutes away via WY-487 S. Laramie has a regional airport, which is about 1.5 hours away via WY-230 W. It offers direct flights to Denver, serviced by United Airlines.
With their small town charm, friendliness, and beautiful views, Encampment and Riverside offer amenities, including restaurants, overnight camping, showers, rental cabins, a post office, water, snacks, and sporting goods. Huston Park Wilderness, Medicine Bow/Routt National Forest
Length: 8.5 miles one-way.
Directions: Green Mountain Trailhead. To reach the southern section of the segment drive about 5.5 miles west of Encampment on WY 70, then go south on FR 550 for about 6.4 miles. Go west on FR 406. 4WD and high clearance vehicles are recommended for the 2.4 miles on FR 406 to the Green Mountain Trailhead. You will need to hike 1.8 miles on the Green Mountain Trail to access the CDT in the Huston Park Wilderness area.
Battle Pass Trailhead: Drive 11.9 miles west of Encampment on WY 70 to the top of Battle Pass. Look for a parking lot on the south side of the Pass. There is also parking 2 miles north of the Battle pass parking area.

Via Battle Pass
The CDT runs just a few miles west of Encampment and Riverside. From town, drive for about 12 miles on WY-70 W and you will come to a parking lot on your left. This section of the highway is closed during the winter months, so be sure to check and make sure it’s open before you head out.
